During a routine observation off Dominica in July, National Geographic Explorers and researchers from Project CETI came upon a remarkable event: the birth of a sperm whale. Because the team happened to be equipped with advanced technology, their data will likely reveal more than we’ve ever known about the species. The glamorous shows are perfectly packaged for photographers and front-row attendees, but the reality backstage is a bit different. Models often have grueling hours and walk several runways a day.
